Research Officer: Africa Trade, Political Economy & Trade Law
Salary from £36,647 to £44,140 pa inclusive with potential to progress to £47,456 pa inclusive of London allowance
This is a fixed-term appointment for two years
The Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA)’s role is to strengthen LSE’s long-term commitment to placing Africa at the heart of understandings and debates about global issues. FLIA works to forge new links with African scholars and institutions and increase the visibility of Africa in LSE’s teaching, research, and policy engagement. FLIA is growing rapidly and the post will support a new research theme on African trade, trade law, and political economy. The candidate will be a part of the newly established Africa Trade Programme led by Dr David Luke.
The post holder will be expected to conduct original academic research on trade policy, trade law, and political economy in the African context. The post holder will specifically carry out independent research to assess the impact of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) policies and agreements in Africa. The post holder will also be required to monitor and track trade negotiations in which African countries are engaged and identify practical policy measures and other changes to improve the developmental impact of trade on the continent.
Candidates should have completed a PhD in a related social science discipline such as Economics, Political Science, International Relations, International Development, or International Trade Law. Proven knowledge of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is expected. Candidates should have experience of writing policy-focused briefs and summaries for external stakeholders. Applicants should also have at least one publication in an academic journal or book on issues related to trade policy, trade law or political economy in Africa.
