The Mandela institute is a leading university centre concerned with research and capacity building in the area of global economic law. It also runs the program of continuing legal education at the Wits School of Law. The research and teaching thrusts of the Mandela Institute are dynamic, have an African focus and currently include International Trade Law, International Investment Law, Competition Law, International Business Transactions, Corporate Law, Environmental law, Natural Resources (Including Mining) Law, Financial Services Law (Including Banking and Pensions), Intellectual Property Law and Information Law (Including Privacy).

Applications are sought for the position of Director. The Director heads the Mandela Institute and reports to the Head of School of Law. The successful candidate will offer intellectual leadership, a vision for the Mandela Institute, managerial competence, a demonstrated ability to liaise with donors, raise funds and have the stature to represent the Mandela Institute both within the university and the world.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A legal academic at the level of Professor (applicants should preferably hold a PHD and must provide evidence of scholarly work published in refereed journals at the professorial level) or Associate Professor (applicants should hold a Master’s Degree and demonstrate refereed output, preferably s/he should hold a PHD) or Adjunct Professor (a practitioner of stature with a distinguished record). Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to advancing the cause of South African and African knowledge and capacity in the research and teaching thrusts of the Mandela Institute.

Duties: 

The development of a strategic vision for the Mandela Institute and its implementation, the oversight of continuing legal education programmes, the management of the staff of the Mandela Institute, raising funds for the Mandela Institute, engaging in academic research and teaching, and developing and fostering local and international partnerships.
