Meeting Description: Join us for the launch of Afronomicslaw’s latest quarterly report, "Intermediaries, Transaction Costs & Sovereign Debt Sustainability in Africa" by Dr Dominic Npoanlari Dagbanja, Associate Professor of Law, Curtin University Law School, Western Australia, Australia. This report sheds new light on a critically overlooked dimension of Africa’s sovereign debt landscape—the transaction costs incurred through the use of intermediaries in debt restructuring processes. While African countries often engage legal and financial advisors to navigate the complexities of sovereign debt restructuring, the associated costs of these engagements have received little to no scholarly attention.
This report breaks new ground by exploring the charges, expenses, and costs arising from third-party intermediaries' participation and the broader implications these costs pose for debt sustainability across the continent. Focusing on Ghana and Zambia, this study provides a detailed analysis of the roles played by various actors in restructuring negotiations and the financial implications that follow. The report situates its findings within the broader context of African sovereign debt management, offering new perspectives that are vital for policymakers, researchers, and civil society advocates working to advance more transparent and equitable debt governance frameworks. We look forward to welcoming you to this timely discussion.
