Title: The East African Community - Between Elitism and People-centredness

Guest Speaker: Professor Tomasz Milej, Kenyatta University

Prof. Milej is an academician specialising in public international law, the law of regional integration and comparative constitutional law. He graduated from the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/Oder with a degree in German law and from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan with a degree in Polish Law. He also holds a university diploma in European Integration from the Jean Moulin University in Lyon. In 2006, he obtained a PhD (Dr. iur) degree at the University of Cologne, which was followed by a post-doctoral degree (“habilitation”) in the year 2014. He has worked as a university lecturer throughout his professional career, starting in 2002 in Frankfurt/Oder and joining the University of Cologne a year later, where he stayed until 2014. In early 2014, he moved to East Africa, taking up a position as a DAAD long-term lecturer at the University of Dar es Salaam. He later joined Kenyatta University as a professor in 2016 and has been with the University to date. In November 2022, he was awarded the Law Teacher of the Year award by the Nairobi Branch of the Law Society of Kenya. In the same month, he was appointed the Department of Public Law Chairperson. One of his focus areas is experiential learning: he is an academic supervisor of the Kenyatta University TradeLab clinic, offering research assistance on the matters of International Economic Law and the Principal Investigator of the Kenyatta University Centre for Clinical Legal Research on Sustainable Development, which enables students to work with local NGOs on research topics relevant to their advocacy objectives.
