Over the past decade African sovereign debt levels had begun to rise to worrying levels. Concerns about the sustainability and management of these debts have now been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic and its economic impacts. Many African governments are afraid that these developments could adversely affect their access to international finance. Therefore, there is a need for creative new approaches to sovereign debt management and restructuring in Africa.
Consequently, the International Development Law Unit (IDLU) in the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria is delighted to announce that it will be sponsoring an inter-disciplinary virtual conference on 15-16 October 2020 on sovereign debt management and renegotiation in Africa with a key focus on the SADC region.
IDLU is pleased to invite academics, researchers, industry experts, policymakers, and officials in civil society organizations and international organizations to submit abstracts for papers to be presented at the conference and included in an e-book on sovereign debt in Africa. Abstracts may address any aspect of the sovereign debt issues from any disciplinary perspective but should explicitly indicate the topic’s relevance to the SADC region. The book’s contributing authors will be paid an honorarium for their contributions.

Full papers should be 5000 words. - All submissions must include a bio of authors, not exceeding 250 words. - Only abstracts submitted in English will be considered. - All abstracts must be original contributions.
