The Eastern Africa wing of the Afronomicslaw Academic Forum was established with a small group of passionate students and early career researchers as a pilot program to be transplanted in other regions of Africa and the Global South. Currently, the Forum is also being established in Southern Africa and West Africa. The activities of the Forum in the Eastern African wing have been a great success (see a list of recent projects). This time around, we intend to expand and reach out to more students and early career researchers from the whole Eastern African region passionate about International Economic Law (IEL) issues as they relate to Africa and the Global South. Membership to the Forum is for one year, after which members will be given an opportunity to renew their membership. The Eastern African Regional Board, which is the leadership of the Forum, is committed to providing an equal opportunity to all the applicants.
I. Membership Options Available to Applicants
Members of the Academic Forum are called ‘Regional Representatives’. There are three major ‘streams’ or ‘departments’ within the Forum; namely, the editorial stream, the partnerships stream and the general Stream. However, and for efficiency purposes, one must first join the general Stream and, where slot later opens up in either of the editorial or partnerships stream, he/she/they may apply for a position in the relevant Stream.
The duties of a Regional Representative
- Regional Representatives are encouraged to write blogs on IEL matters related to Africa and the Global South. The Lead Editor of the Forum will provide ongoing support to support Regional Representatives in the publication process.
- Regional Representatives are expected to carry out tasks assigned to them by the Stream leaders, the Lead Editor of the Forum and/or the Editors of Afronomicslaw.org. In discharging assigned tasks, Regional Representatives are expected to work consistently, on time and to an excellent standard.
- Regional Representatives are expected to attend all activities (e.g. development sessions/workshops/webinars etc.) organised by the Stream leaders, the Lead Editor of the Forum and/or the Editors of Afronomicslaw.org. When attending these sessions, Regional Representatives are expected to carry out assigned pre-event preparations (e.g. reading background material relevant to a topic for discussion) and discuss the issues and business on the agenda.
II. Eligibility Criteria
Eligible candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Must be from a country in Eastern Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Eritrea, South Sudan, Sudan, Rwanda, Burundi, Djibouti).
- Student (undergraduate or graduate student) or an early career researcher based within the East African region.
- Must have a demonstrable interest in international economic law as it relates to Africa and the Global South. III. Application Process To become a member of the academic Forum, applicants should proceed as follows:
Stage 1
Submit a statement of interest in English (with not more than 250 words) which must meet the eligibility criteria outlined above. Applicants should also submit a Curriculum Vitae (3 pages maximum) with the names and contact details of two referees who can be contacted. Referees will only be contacted for shortlisted applicants.
Stage 2
Applicants who are shortlisted will be invited for virtual interviews at a specified date and time to be communicated in due course.
