ANU College of Law is delighted to announce the ANU Press ECR Prize in Legal Scholarship, awarded annually to the most outstanding and insightful manuscript submitted to ANU Press in any area of law and legal studies by an early career researcher. The prizewinner will receive AU$2,500, have costs covered for publishing an open-access monograph up to 80,000 words with ANU Press, and an invitation to visit ANU to launch the book at an ‘ANU Press Lecture in Law’.

We welcome submissions from all early career researchers (i.e. any candidate who has completed their doctoral degree no later than five years from the date of submission of proposal) based anywhere in the world and from a range of perspectives. We especially encourage proposals touching upon novel, cutting-edge, and emerging areas of legal research, including ideas based on interdisciplinary approaches. Please submit your proposal to ANU Press before the midnight (AET) 9 December 2022. To be considered for the ANU Press ECR Prize in Legal Scholarship, please indicate in your submission if you satisfy the eligibility criteria set out below.

With its well-established presence in legal publishing, ANU Press Law Editorial Board titles enjoy a global audience including researchers, students, academics, practitioners, and policymakers. At ANU Press, we strive to make knowledge accessible to all through our open-access books and are committed to nurturing emerging legal scholars from across the world.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Candidates will be considered for the prize if they have completed their doctoral degree in law or related studies no later than five years from the date of submission of proposal.
  • Co-authorship is permitted, provided all authors meet the stated conditions; however, in case of co-authorship, the prize amount will be shared jointly by the co-authors.
  • The book proposal must be submitted exclusively to ANU Press for consideration of publication. If the candidate subsequently decides to submit their proposal to another press, they are required to first withdraw their proposal from ANU Press.
  • The manuscript submitted to ANU Press must be original and unpublished.

Submission Process

To submit your book proposal to ANU Press for an initial round of evaluation, please download and complete the Book Proposal Form (PDF, 0.1MB) and email it, along with the required documents, to ANU Press (anupress@anu.edu.au). The winner will be announced in March 2023 on the ANU College of Law and ANU Press websites.
