Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way governments and businesses operate - reshaping systems of service delivery, decision-making, and governance. Yet, as AI becomes integral to both public and private sector functions, concerns over its human rights implications have grown. The United Nations Working Group on Business and Human Rights (UNWG), in its report Artificial Intelligence Procurement and Deployment: Ensuring Alignment with the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (A/HRC/59/53), highlights the urgent need to integrate human rights due diligence (HRDD) into AI procurement and deployment practices. The report finds that both States and businesses often procure and deploy AI systems without adequate safeguards, which results in risks such as discrimination, surveillance, manipulation, and exclusion. The report further stresses that fragmented regulatory approaches, weak enforcement mechanisms, and limited participation from the Global South have resulted in governance gaps and a lack of universal standards for rights-respecting AI.

This webinar seeks to unpack the findings and recommendations of the UNWG report and explore practical ways to ensure that AI systems are procured and deployed in alignment with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs). It aims to foster dialogue among policymakers, human rights practitioners, businesses, and civil society on integrating a human rights-based approach throughout the AI lifecycle - from design to deployment.
