Meeting Description: Join us for the launch of Afronomicslaw’s latest quarterly report, "DEBT-FOR-NATURE SWAPS: FIT FOR AFRICA?" by ADEBAYO MAJEKOLAGBE, AND AURORE SOKPOH. This report critically examines the trends and drivers of the debt-for-nature swap (DNS) in Africa, including its design frameworks, challenges, and potential, as currently implemented, and outlines the specific design principles for a fit-for-Africa DNS.
Adebayo Majekolagbe is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alberta, Faculty of Law. Adebayo is a fellow of the Marine and Environmental Law Institute, Dalhousie University and a member of the International Association for Impact Assessment, the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment, and the Environmental Planning and Assessment Caucus of the Canadian Environmental Network. He has won several awards, including SSHRC’s Vanier Award, Killam Trust’s Killam Award and others. He holds a Master of Laws degree from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and Dalhousie University, Canada. He also holds a PhD from the Schulich School of Law at Dalhousie University.
Aurore Sokpoh is a political economist with a strong research focus on sovereign debt and the international financial architecture, particularly in the African context. With seven years of experience at the intersection of private capital, international financial systems, and development finance, she bridges critical research and policy engagement to tackle Africa’s socio-economic challenges. Aurore holds a Master’s in Africa and International Development from the University of Edinburgh, a Master’s in International Economics from Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne, and a double Bachelor degree in Economics and Law from the same university.
