Announcement of Afronomicslaw.org Academic Forum, a New Editor and Three Contributing Editors

Afronomicslaw.org is pleased to introduce the Afronomicslaw Academic Forum and to welcome a New Editor and three contributing editors effective immediately. Ohio Omiunu, who for the last year has been a contributing editor will become an editor on Afronomicslaw.org. Ohio will also be heading the Afronomicslaw.org Academic Forum. The three new contributing editors who will join Afronomicslaw.org are Dr. Dilini PathiranaVellah Kedogo Kigwiru and Federico Suárez Ricaurte.

The Afronomicslaw Academic Forum

The Afronomicslaw.org Academic Forum will bring together undergraduate and graduate students as well as early career researchers from across the world interested in international economic law issues relating to Africa and the Global South. The main goals of Academic Forum include to (i) encourage and build core research skills in teaching, research, theory, methods and writing; (ii) build a forum that is inclusive and accessible (iii) develop content for Afronomicslaw.org and where possible to encourage authors to submit to the African Journal of International Economic Law; (iv) over time, hold workshops and masterclasses on core research skills in teaching, research, theory, methods and writing; (v) organize annual poster/essay competitions on international economic law issues. Here are the Bios of the new Editor and Contributing Editors

Dr. Ohio Omiunu

Ohio joined the Law School in February 2016. He received his PhD in Law from the University of Liverpool in 2015. Before that, he completed his LLM in International Business Law at the University of Hull in 2010. Ohio's research interests cut across disciplines such as international economic law, foreign relations law, comparative constitutional law, and comparative federal studies. Ohio has published extensively on topics relating to the governance of the global economy, particularly the way that sub-national actors (especially constituent units in federal systems) and non-state actors enable or resist economic integration at regional and global level. Ohio is also conducting research on the relationship between international economic law and the implementation of the United Nations sustainable development goals (UN SDGs).

Dr. Dilini Pathirana

Dilini Pathirana holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree and a Master of Laws (LLM) Degree from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. After successfully completing the Final Examination for the Admission of Attorneys-at-Law conducted by the Sri Lanka Law College, in 2010, she was admitted and enrolled as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka. Since 2009, she works as a faculty member in the Faculty of Law, University of Colombo where she teaches International Investment Law and Company Law for undergraduate law students. In 2015, she secured a Chinese Government Scholarship to pursue her Doctorate at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL, China) from where she earned her Doctoral Degree in International Law (major in International Investment Law).

Vellah Kedogo Kigwiru

Vellah Kedogo Kigwiru, an advocate of the High Court of Kenya, is currently a Doctoral Research Fellow at the Technical University of Munich’s (TUM) School of Governance, School of Politics, Department of International Relations and a Guest Researcher, Marx Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition, Munich Germany. Before that, Kigwiru has previously worked as a legal analyst at the Competition Authority of Kenya, adjunct lecturer at Riara University School of Law, an associate at Laichena Mugambi and Company Advocates and as a legal researcher at the National Council for Law Reporting in Kenya. She holds a Bachelors in Law and a Masters of Law in Public International Law from the University of Nairobi.  Kigwiru’s research interests focuses on topics that seek to understand governance and the actual implementation of laws, rules and principles by national and regional level institutions in the global south and in particular Africa, and how they interact with global governance. In doing so, through theoretical and methodological approaches, in addition to historical trajectories, she explores why there are great disparities between the goal of establishing these institutions and the actual implementation. Her research topics focus on: competition law and policy; legal technology and innovation; international economic law; trade law; regional integration; human rights; and legal research and writing.  Kigwiru has recently published a journal article on the cooperation of competition policy under the African Continental Free Trade Area and she is conducting a PhD research on ‘Regional Regulation of Market Competition in Africa’ using the COMESA competition regime as a case study in a comparative analysis with the European Union.

Federico Suárez Ricaurte

Federico Suárez Ricaurte is a lawyer, professor and researcher in international economic law and constitutional law at the Faculty of Law of the Externado University of Colombia. He was a visiting researcher at the Transnational Law Institute at King's College London (2016)
