The global trade system is not neutral. Constructed during the second half of the 20th century, trade rules tend to support the interests of the major trading nations and corporations of that era, while the priorities of the South and the global 99% have routinely been sidelined. Today, while the system can impact us all, affecting our climate, jobs, work conditions, public services and the supply and prices of essential goods, the systematic exclusion of Southern countries from the top-table of trade decision-making has caused Southern perspectives and interests to be sidelined. In this panel we invite eminent speakers from three continents to reflect on these challenges, presenting their perspectives on the trade system, and sharing their priorities for change.

The primary objective of this assignment is to contribute to ATPC’s various workstreams centering around the interface of trade policy on the one hand and climate change and environmental concerns on the other within the context of African integration led by trade. The addition of a trade-and-environment expert to ATPC’s pool of experts will allow the Centre to expand, deepen and refine its work and provide opportunities for more robust and in-depth analysis of initiatives taken in this area.

The American Branch of the International Law Association (ABILA) is excited to announce that registration is now open for International Law Weekend (#ILW2023) which will be held October 19-21, 2023 in NYC. The unifying theme for ILW 2023 is Beyond International Law.

This book brings together a team of talented young researchers convened by the African Sovereign Debt Justice Network (AfSDJN). Over a two year period they researched and carefully considered how best to transform climate finance in an era of sovereign debt distress.

The Canadian Yearbook of International Law, Canada’s leading peer-reviewed international legal journal, will host a Young Scholar’s Workshop on November 1, 2023 in partnership with the International Law Group of the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law.

The leaps in AI innovation raise ethical, legal, regulatory, and policy questions regarding what should be regulated, legislated and how it should be done. From the perspective of law, the emergence of AI has unsettled established principles of law, necessitating re-evaluation of regulatory approaches. The role of regulation in creating the environment for AI to flourish has therefore become timely and as various countries and regions are beginning to develop regulatory frameworks for AI, it is crucial to consider the challenges associated with determining what should be regulated, legislated and the appropriate methods to achieve this.

The sponsoring organizations of the International Conference on the Future of African Trade and the AfCFTA invite submissions and participant nominations for a collaborative exchange and discussion at a two-day hybrid conference to take place on November 9 and 10, 2023. The conference working language will be English and will include paper presentations on topics detailed below. It will also include working group discussions with a broad range of stakeholders, including, for example, business leaders, members of the judiciary, and representatives of non-governmental organizations, law reform agencies, policy makers, and other interested persons on topics related to African trade law.
